E+ Program Background

E+ Program Background

Boston, a national leader in green building, is promoting the next generation of high performance deep green buildings. The E+ Green Building Program is demonstrating, and proving, the feasibility of regenerative multi-unit residential buildings and bringing energy and environmentally positive homes to Boston’s neighborhoods.

A collaboration between the Boston Planning & Development Agency’s Urban Design department and the City’s Department of Neighborhood Development, the E+ program challenges the design, development and construction community to design and build deep green, energy positive homes. A successful “energy positive” home exceeds LEED’s highest Platinum rating and actually returns clean energy to the grid. The BPDA and the City of Boston have worked with communities in Roxbury and Jamaica Plain to identify potential pilot project sites, gain local support, and issue E+ Green Building request for proposals (RFP).

Boston’s Environment, Equity Energy positive (E+) Green building program seeks to advance community sustainability, industry practices, and public awareness of energy efficient green buildings and to construct high performance green building prototypes that can serve as models for future practice. The E+ Green Building Program is an initiative of the City of Boston and a partnership of the Department of Neighborhood Development, the Office of Environment, Energy and Open Space, and the Boston Planning & Development Agency.
